Some Images of Special Kids Really Benefit from Special Effects!

   During a recent trip to Phoenix to teach a Special Kids Photography workshop, I invited my friend Kristie to participate in a little photo shoot in her backyard. After all, I was a guest in her home; I thought it would be nice if I could provide the family with some nice candids of Kristie for the upcoming Christmas holiday.
   Kristie has been my dear friend for several years. When I lived near Phoenix, we loved to go to movies together (even though we seldom agreed on which one to see). She enjoys movies like Legally Blonde; I prefer thrillers. Of course we go with her choice!
   The face of the person with Down syndrome is generally quite round, as shown in examples here. The roundness can be reduced through angle and use of post-processing filters (Nik software, for example). It was late in the day and the light was slipping away. No flash or reflectors were used here; we were just having a little "photo fun." Several Nik post-processing "filters" were used to create the image on the right from the original (left). 

 


Obviously not a good idea to have her look down.		   
Looking up isn't much better here. Stretch out that chin!
Better—behind the fork of a tree and looking through it.
Too much arm is showing. Ask her to perform a task—
"Put your chin on your arm
and look for an ant below."
