Santa Ana workshop group creates "cool" images

The alley behind Samy's Camera in Santa Ana (March 30) provided some fine graffiti and interesting textures for the post-workshop photo session with Jaren, a 15 year old boy with autism. Images from left to right were created by Marina Milosevic, Adam Corcoran and workshop instructor, Karen Dórame.

Photoshop and digital filters help make image improvements
During the model session with Jaren, students soon learned he was a reluctant "smiler." Smiles are not always the primary objective in pursuit of a quality portrait of a special individual, but "pleasant expressions" are always welcomed. Since Jaren is a teenager and close to "senior" portraiture age, the group decided to portray him in a "cool" setting. Shown here are some helpful tips that a photographer can employ to enhance an image of a young man. It is not recommended that a photographer take on the task of removing scars and birthmarks without the permission of the mother. However, in this case, a few blemishes were cleaned up a bit. For instance, there was a little bit of drool that was digitally "wiped away" from his lower lip. A bit of teen acne was lessened and when looking closely, one can notice that the lips have been altered just a little to provide a more pleasant look. This was accomplished by choosing "liquefy" in Photoshop CS3 and ever-so-slightly nudging up the corner of the upper lip. Nik's "old photo color" plug-in filter converted the image to the special effects shown.
